The guest speaker of this webinar was Richelle Marracino, a lead physician at California State University - San Bernardino, who also works with a large number of students on a daily basis. The seminar began by introducing what a typical medical journey would entail from high school to pursuing a career. This was followed by tips on how to succeed in clinical work as well as the significance of knowing our purpose. Furthermore, Dr. Marracino explored 10 questions every undergraduate student should ask before going to medical school such as “how passionate are you about learning new things?” The 3 qualities that are essential for medical students to succeed - talent, discipline, and grit - were explained. Lastly, the importance of people that believe in you, a mentor, and the qualities of a good mentor were also emphasized.

The first guest speaker of this webinar, Dr. Joseph J. Allen, is an optometrist who also runs a YouTube channel with over 300,000 subscribers. He began by explaining his own journey into discovering his passion for optometry, followed by the education he pursued before attaining his career. He then went over different modes of practice that are available in this career apart from private practices, such as working in hospitals, research, and industrial production. Last, Dr. Allen explained the responsibilities and skills required for this career, like using technical devices and diagnosing disease, as well as some subspecialties that are offered.


The second guest speaker was Dr. Grant Dunbar, a veterinarian that owns his own animal hospital called Chino Hills Animal Hospital. He began with his journey as the son of a veterinarian and how his childhood experience led him to pursuing his career. He then described his educational process and professional start as a student with adequate grades but a strong will and dedication to become a veterinarian. Dr. Grant explained how he bought an animal hospital and expanded the business tremendously in just a few years. He ended off with a few general pieces of advice that are essential in any career.

The guest speaker of this webinar was Dr. Austin Chiang, a gastroenterologist, and an advanced endoscopist.  The seminar began by detailing the various stages of his medical journey including medical school, residency, fellowships, and obtaining his master’s degree in public health.  Dr. Chiang went into further detail pertaining to the reason why he chose to pursue a career in medicine and gastroenterology. It was mentioned that it was due to an interest in helping people as well as prior exposure to medicine. The seminar ended with a Q and A session where Dr. Chiang expanded on various topics such as exploring interests, the fluidity of pursuing medicine, as well as undergraduate majors.  Furthermore, Dr. Chiang expanded on college pedigree as well as tips for applying to medical school and standing out in regards to applications.  Lastly, the work-life balance of a gastroenterologist, a typical day in gastroenterology, as well as the best and worst things about the career were also outlined.
